The digestive system

Explore the digestive system using this fun interactive.

Food is the body's fuel. A healthy, balanced diet contains food from all the major food groups, which is broken down into nutrients within the digestive system.

Why eat eggs?

Eggs are a good source of protein – in fact, egg protein is the highest quality food protein. This is because it contains lots of amino acids, which are the building blocks of the body, and it is easily digested by the body. If you are vegetarian and don't like eating meat and fish, eggs, with other foods such as beans, peas, lentils, nuts and seeds, will provide you with the vital protein your body needs. There is no recommended limit on how many eggs we should eat (NHS Choices).

Eggs are an important source of fats, which provide the body with energy and aid the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. They also contain special 'essential' fats (omega-3 fats) that help with the function of our brains and eyes.

Vitamins are very important in keeping the body healthy and eggs contain all of the recognised vitamins, except Vitamin C.

Humans also require at least 20 mineral elements to function normally, and most of these can be found in eggs. Check out https://www.egginfo.co.uk/egg-nutrition/information to see just how good eggs are for us.
